Bio
Al Perry has been the Athletic Director at Mott Community College since 2017. Prior to becoming the Athletic Director, Perry served as the Associate Athletic Director at Mott beginning in 2013. His career at Mott Community College began in 2010 inside Student Services, specifically the Financial Aid Department.
During Perry’s time as Athletic Director the Mott Community College Athletics Department has continued to be a leader nationally in the world of community college athletics. With regard to facilities, in 2017 a three year over $7 million renovation took place on the Ballenger Field House to transform it into a championship venue for large scale tournaments. And beginning in 2019, Mott has begun hosting significant championships with the newly renovated venue, most notably the Men’s and Women’s District A, B, and C Basketball Championship, which is one of the largest community college tournaments in the country. In addition, the varsity softball diamond was constructed, which brought Mott Athletics its first home venue for the sport. And a substantial investment was made into the Ernie Myers Baseball Diamond, erecting a press box and concession stand.
In addition to expanding the facilities, the Mott Athletics Department has also expanded sport offerings under Perry. In 2019, the department was one of the first community colleges in Michigan to launch eSports. The team is still competing in the NJCAAE with two title offerings. In 2020, the department reclassified the men’s wrestling club to a varsity NJCAA sport offering. And in 2022, Mott became one of the first community colleges in Region 12 to launch a women’s golf program.
Perry is actively involved in Mott Community College’s athletic association affiliations. Currently, he is the Executive Administrator for the Michigan Community College Athletic Association (MCCAA), a role he has held since 2020. He also has been the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region 12 Men’s Director since 2022. He currently serves on the NJCAA national committees for Men’s Wrestling (since 2020), Women’s Golf DII (2024), and the Championship Events Committee. Historically, he has served as the MCCAA baseball and volleyball sport chairs, and the NJCAA men’s volleyball, clay shooting, DII baseball. He has also been selected as the MCCAA Athletic Director of the Year twice, 2017 and 2023.
Perry is also the Director of Student Life at the College. The departments were merged in 2017. During his leadership, the Department has increased the number of events, number of registered student organizations, and the number of large scale events held on campus.
Perry grew up in Durand, Michigan and graduated from Powers Catholic High School in Flint. He earned a Bachelor's Degree in Political Science and a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from the University of Michigan-Flint. He currently resides in Swartz Creek, Michigan with his wife Samantha Orvis and their three children Josephine, Margaux, and Almon.
